If you believe that…
1) English is a language that defies logic when it comes to spelling.
2) There are more exceptions than regularities in spelling words in English..
3) You're born as either a good speller or you're not.
4) Spelling should have a low priority on the list of language interventions because technology (spell check) can compensate for poor spelling.
5) Higher order language operations like composition, are not dependent on success at a mechanical level, i.e. spelling.
Consider …
Spelling is a language system that evolves over time, links to working memory and reflects the speller's competencies in phonology, morphology, semantics, orthographics, and mental graphic representation.
There is a software tool for differential diagnosis that will reshape your thinking about spelling errors in the same way that the concept of "phonological process disorders" reshaped our thinking about articulation.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the underlying causes of spelling errors.
- Understand a software program for collecting and analyzing a spelling sample.
- Understand an intervention program that links assessment results to differentiated intervention activities.
